International Mathematical Olympiad Contestants Visit Information Technology Center

On July 11, contestants in the International Mathematical Olympiad, currently being held in Makuhari, Chiba Prefecture, visited the Information Technology Center and the Kavli Institute for the Physics and Mathematics of the Universe (Kavli IPMU) at the University of Tokyo’s Kashiwa Campus in Kashiwa City, Chiba Prefecture.

The International Mathematical Olympiad 2023, held in Japan for the first time in 20 years, had its opening ceremony on July 7, followed by a two-day exam on July 8 and 9. During the scoring and coordination process, athletes representing countries participated in various cultural exchange events to experience the host country’s culture. As part of this program, players from France, Italy, and the Czech Republic chose a tour of the University of Tokyo’s Kashiwa Campus, visiting the Information Technology Center at Kashiwa II Campus and the Kavli IPMU at the Kashiwa Campus.

After arriving at the Information Technology Center on a large bus, the contestants received brief guidance and then divided into three groups. Each group was guided by faculty members from the Supercomputing Research Division of the Information Technology Center and toured the supercomputing room. After the tour of the supercomputing facilities, they attended a lecture on research using supercomputers, followed by a question-and-answer session and informal discussions, and then boarded the bus again to visit the Kavli IPMU at the Kashiwa Campus.
